FREE INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY

Every Wednesday from Feb 15th through April 11th



Free income tax assistance provided by VITA, for elderly, individuals & families with low to moderate incomes, will be offered at Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging, 526 Oregon, every Wednesday, February 15 through April 11. Call 785-742-7152 or 800-883-2549 for an appointment. VITA also accepts drop-offs on Wednesdays (only) between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Below are answers to some common questions:
Do I need to file a tax return?
Even if you are not required to file a return, you may want to do so in order to claim tax credits or refunds which are due to you.
If you are a Kansas resident and meet certain qualifications you may be eligible for the Kansas Food Sales Tax and/or Homestead refunds. Ask your tax preparer.
No, complex returns will not filed. In order to assist as many clients as possible, volunteer tax preparers will not prepare returns involving complicated farm, business or investment income. Determining the difficulty of the return is left to the discretion of the tax preparer.
Do I Qualify for the Earned Income Credit?
If you are between the ages of 25 and 65 you may qualify for the Earned Income Credit (EIC).
To be eligible for the EIC, you must have earned income from employment or from self employment.
Your earned income must be less than:
· $13,660 ($18,740 for married filing jointly) if you do not have a qualifying child;
· $36,052 ($41,132 for married filing jointly) if you have one qualifying child;
· $40,964 ($46,044 for married filing jointly) if you have two qualifying children.
· $43,998 ($49,078 for married filing jointly) if you have three or more qualifying children.

The following information is needed to complete a return:
· Your copy of last year’s tax return.
· PHOTO Identification (driver’s license or state issued ID)
· Social security numbers for everyone in the household
· W-2 and 1099 forms
· Any mortgage company statements received in 2011.
· Bank account information if you want your refund direct-deposited (this method is encouraged).
· Information about your home:
OWNERS — your 2011 Real Estate Tax Statement from the County Treasurer.
RENTERS — bring name, address and phone number of your landlord. Also, proof of     total rent paid in 2011.
