Hanover @ Centralia
Girls‘ Varsity: Tiffany Bruna (Hanover) 2 pts (hit go-ahead free throws with 10 seconds to go)
It was a game that went down to the wire and ultimately swung in the favor of the Hanover Wildcats, who with the 44-40 win notched their first two-game winning streak of the season. The Centralia Panthers had a five-point lead going into half, leading 19-14, but after an 18-7 third quarter for the Wildcats the lead and momentum swung in Hanover‘s favor going into the fourth quarter. Tied at 40 all junior point guard, Tiffany Bruna, hit two clutch free throws in the waning seconds, to give the Wildcats the led. Centralia then had a chance to tie the game or win it with a three-pointer, but they turned the ball over resulting in a transition basket for Hanover to end the contest.
Seven players scored for Hanover in the game, with only one reaching the double digit plateau, that being junior forward, Claire Bruna scoring 13 points, on the evening. The most crucial points for Hanover came from Tiffany Bruna as she made two free throws late in the game to give the Wildcats the lead. Six Centralia Panthers tallied points in the contest with only two scoring more than four points, senior guard Vanessa Burdiek scored 10 points, while senior forward, Michelle Haug scored a game-high 19 points.
Hanover moved to 8-7 on the season with the win, while Centralia fell to 8-5 on the season.
Boys‘ Varsity: Sam Steinlage (Centralia) 19 points
Centralia Panthers started off slow at the beginning of the game, but quickly got things going about half way through the first quarter and never looked back after that, notching the 64-47 win over the Hanover Wildcats. Hanover came into the game riding a 12-game winning streak, but never really got the offense going within enough time, to make a comeback. Centralia led by 16 points at the half, 33-17, after a 17-8 second quarter, and never gave up the lead.
Centralia spread the wealth of points through six scorers on the night, with four players all tallying double figures. Seniors, Hayden Cross and Michael Glatzcak scored 10 and 11 points respectively on the night, while sophomore forward, Brett Burdiek added 15 points himself. But the man of the night for the Panthers was sophomore forward, Sam Steinlage, who notched a game-high and season high for him 19 points. Steinlage not only was the spark to the Centralia offense, but did his damage on the offensive boards and got his points with put back shots; he also drew two charges in the contest.
Centralia snapped Hanover‘s 12-game winning streak with their win and improved to 10-3 on the season, while Hanover fell to 12-2 on the year.
