Girl‘s Varsity: McKayla Brezina (Nemaha Valley) 10pts

It was a tough task for the Lady Raiders of Nemaha Valley as they took on undefeated and defending state champions, the Lady Wildcats of Holton. Holton pounced out to an early 20-6 lead after the first quarter and didn‘t look back from there as they cruised to a 62-33 victory to improve to 6-0 on the season. Nemaha Valley was plagued by turnovers as Holton forced 29 errors by the Lady Raiders. Senior guard, Jayna Smith lead the way for Holton with 20 points, but Nemaha Valley fought throughout the game and McKayla Brezina lead the Raiders 10 points. Brezina and the Lady Raiders came out of the half with a spark and aggressive effort but were just in to deep of a hole and ultimately fell to 2-4 on the season with the loss.

Boy‘s Varsity: Alex Hermesch (Nemaha Valley) 30 points

In what was a highly anticipated matchup of undefeated squads for the top spot of the Big Seven standings going into Christmas break; it lived up to the hype from the start. The first half was a barrage of points with both squads hitting shots from everywhere on the floor and going into halftime it was a one-point game 34-33 in favor of Nemaha Valley. Second half was close between the two squads but Nemaha Valley continued to shot well from the floor, while Holton cooled off slightly, allowing the Raiders of Nemaha Valley to extend their lead and ultimately snatch the 71-56 road win. With the win the Raiders stay undefeated (6-0), while the Wildcats of Holton suffered it‘s first loss on the season and first loss in the league in two years.

It was two players for the Raiders leading the way in scoring, netting 52 of the 71 for Nemaha Valley. Trent Olberding scoring 22 points, while it was Alex Hermesch stealing the show with 30 points; 22 of which came in the first half. Hermesch notched his second United Bank & Trust "Player to Bank On" award this season. Junior, Tyler Burdiek dropped 26 points for Holton, while Trent Tanking chipped in 12, as well, as Holton fell to 5-1 on the season.
